Coverage and care, all in one place

GreenShield is the first organization in Canada to operate as a payer-provider — offering insurance, administering benefits, and paying claims as a ‘payer’ while offering health services such as mental health, pharmacy, and medical services as a ‘provider.’ Integrating both sides of the payer-provider equation enables GreenShield to simplify access to care, remove administrative barriers, and improve health outcomes for its customers.

Our profits go back into improving the health and well-being of Canadians. We partner with community organizations to expand access to health services and co-create new, culturally appropriate products and services, scaling our impact and growing our business. 

Our founding story: The better way

Before establishing GreenShield, our founder, William Wilkinson, witnessed a mother sacrifice her health by forgoing her own medicine to ensure she could afford a prescription for her sick daughter.

William had seen enough.

He believed that all Canadians deserved proper access to the prescription medication required to support their health care needs.

He knew there had to be "A Better Way."

The result was the creation of North America's first prepaid drug plan. In 1957, GreenShield was established as a non-profit organization, reinvesting our earnings to support Better Health for All Canadians
