Here’s what you need to know about your GreenShield Insurance student health and dental plan.
Opt-out Info
Have alternate equivalent coverage and want to opt out of your student health and dental plan? Requests can be made for a limited time only. Certain restrictions may apply. Click the link below for more information.

Inactive Period
You may be in a temporary inactive period while GreenShield collects and updates your enrolment information. Don’t worry - you can still submit paper claims. We will process your claims once your information is updated.
Once the enrolment is complete and the inactive period ends, you can sign up for online services at greenshield.ca/student. Our online member portal provides quick and easy access to:
- Online claim submission
- Your benefit booklet
- Search for a benefit provider
- Search drugs by DIN to check eligibility
- And much more!
Once the inactive period ends, you can even submit claims right from your mobile device. Just download GreenShield+. Could it get any easier?
Remember, your GS ID number is your three-letter school code, your student number and “-00” (example: OPU111222333-00).
Here’s a Look at Some of What Your Plan Covers
Your student health and dental plan ensures you can take care of your health and well-being during your post-secondary studies by offering a wide range of benefits. Take a look at the Schedule of Benefits for the details.
Schedule of Benefits – Effective September 1, 2024
Your Co-pay:
- Prescription drugs: 20% co-pay per prescription or refill.
- Footwear, Prosthetics, Braces, Stockings and Crutches: 20% co-pay.
- All Other Health Benefits: 0% co-pay.
HEALTH BENEFIT PLAN
Overall Maximum
- $10,000 per benefit year (excluding Prescription Drugs and Gender Affirmation).
Prescription Drugs
- Maximum $1,500 per benefit year, including HPV vaccines.
Diabetic Testing Agents, Needles and Syringes
- $1,000 per benefit year combined with Diabetic Equipment (included in the $1,500 Prescription Drugs Maximum).
Hospital
- Public general hospital, semi-private room: Reasonable and customary charges.
Medical Items and Services
- Gender affirmation (diagnosis of gender dysphoria from a physician (M.D.) or nurse practitioner is required): Reasonable and customary charges, limited to $10,000 lifetime.
- Footwear (custom made boots or shoes & custom made foot orthotics): $200 per benefit year for all footwear services combined.
- Prosthetics: $1,500 per benefit year.
- Compression Stockings: Reasonable and customary charges.
- Braces, Casts and Crutches: $500 per benefit year.
Emergency Transportation
- No co-pay.
- Reasonable and customary charges.
Private Duty Nursing in the Home
- Reasonable and customary charges.
Professional Services
- Acupuncturist, Naturopath, Homeopath, Registered Massage Therapist (Rx required),$20 per visit up to 20 visits per benefit year combined.
- Chiropractor, Physiotherapist: $20 per visit up to 20 visits per benefit year combined.
- Speech Therapist: $20 per visit up to 20 visits per benefit year.
- Podiatrist: $20 per visit up to 20 visits per benefit year.
- Psychologist, MindBeacon Therapist Guided Program Social Worker/Counsellor, Master of Social Work or Psychotherapist: $500 per benefit year combined, including $300 per benefit year for MindBeacon program.
- Holistic Nutritional Consultant: included in the overall combined maximum of $500 per benefit year for Psychologist, MindBeacon Therapist Guided Program, Social Worker/Counsellor, Master of Social Work and Psychotherapist.
Accidental Dental
- Reasonable and customary charges.
Vision
- Prescription eye glasses or contact lenses: $150 every 24 consecutive months.
- Optometric eye exams eligible for covered persons: $80 for one eye exam every 2 years.
TRAVEL BENEFIT PLAN
Maximum Number of Days per Trip
- 60 days.
Maximum
- $5,000,000 per covered person per benefit year.
DENTAL BENEFIT PLAN
Fee Guide
- The current Provincial Dental Association Fee Guide for General Practitioners in the province where services are rendered.
Maximum
- $1,000 per benefit year.
Basic Services and Comprehensive Basic Services
- 40% co-pay.
ACCIDENTAL DEATH AND DISMEMBERMENT
- $5,000.

As a GreenShield Insurance plan member you have access to these programs/services.
Student Assistance Program
- Your Student Assistance Program (SAP) through GreenShield Mental Health provides you with immediate and confidential help for any work, health or life concern. Your SAP coverage provides you and your eligible dependents with up to 5 hours of individual counselling and up to 5 hours of couples counselling. You also have access to advisory services including legal, financial, career, health and life transitions.
GreenShield Mental Health provides an easy online intake and digital user experience by using their proprietary matching technology to ensure you find the right counsellor based on your clinical needs. To ensure the fit is just right, your first 15 minutes of counselling do not apply to your 5 covered hours.

The MindBeacon Therapist Guided Program™
- As a GreenShield Insurance plan member, you have access to guided digital therapy through MindBeacon. Offered to you and your dependents (age 16 and over), at no out-of-pocket cost to you, the MindBeacon Therapist Guided Program is an effective, easy-to-access way to receive personalized therapy guided by a mental health professional. It’s a fully digital program, so with no face-to-face appointments to schedule and get to, your therapy happens anywhere and anytime that’s comfortable for you. If the MindBeacon Therapist Guided Program is a good fit for you, you can access the program anytime via the web or app using your computer or mobile device. Refer to the Summary of Benefits in your Benefit Plan Booklet for information about any co-pays, deductibles, and maximums that may apply to this program.

GreenShield Mental Health
- GreenShield Mental Health is a digital platform that uses internet-based Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (iCBT) to help plan members and their eligible dependents (age 15+) with mild to moderate anxiety and/or depression take control of their mental health. It includes interactive learning modules, tools, and optional coaching to help develop positive coping strategies and reduce life-disrupting symptoms.
The program is an effective and easy-to-use anxiety and depression management tool, available to GreenShield Insurance plan members and their eligible dependents (age 15+) at a discounted rate and can be accessed on most phones, tablets, and computers. Access GreenShield Mental Health at www.tranquility.app/gsc. Choose from a self-guided program ($75 plus applicable taxes) or a coach-assisted program ($325 plus applicable taxes)*. The programs are reimbursed subject to existing limitations (co-pays, deductibles, and/or maximums) found in the mental health Paramedical Practitioners section of the Summary of Benefits in your Benefit Plan Booklet.
*GreenShield Mental Health is currently available for GreenShield Insurance plan members residing in Canada.
Legal Assistance
The National Student Health Network has arranged for Health Plan Members, through Foundever Assistance Services Corporation to provide you with timely, cost-effective access to experienced lawyers to guide you through most major types of law, including:
Family, Criminal, Civil litigation, Landlord and tenant, Residential real estate, Wills and Estates, Tax, Employment, Condo/Strata, Immigration and Identity Theft Support.
As a member of the health plan you have access to unlimited free summary telephone legal advice and unlimited referrals to local lawyers at preferred rates.
Summary Telephonic Legal Advice
You can call on the toll-free number 1 877-333-3884 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, to speak to a customer service representative who can put you in touch with a lawyer at no charge.
Advice lawyers are available to call clients from 8 am to midnight daily. Please do not hesitate to request a call back after regular business hours, on weekends or holidays.
Unlimited
You can access the service as many times as reasonably required, you are not limited to one call per issue and telephonic advice sessions are not limited in duration. The advice lawyers will take the time necessary to ensure that your questions are answered.
Local Lawyer Referral - test
If you require the services of a lawyer, you can obtain a referral to a lawyer in your area through a customer services representative. Should you wish both a referral and legal advice, an advice lawyer will be able to give you a referral at the end of your advice session.
Preferred Rates
As a member of the Canadian Federation of Students you will receive a discount of 25% on fees charged by the lawyer in most situations (excluding real estate law) as long as the lawyer’s account is paid within 30 days of receipt. (Note: most referral lawyers also provide a free initial 30-minute consultation.)
Bilingual
The confidential services provided are bilingual. This includes the customer service representatives and advice lawyers. Bilingual referral lawyers are also available with some travel requested in certain provinces.
