Step 1: Confirmation

Receive an Email Confirmation

Once you’ve submitted your application, we’ll send you an email that confirms we’ve received it. There’s no need for you to follow up with us as we’ll be sure to let you know.

Step 2: Update

Application Approval Update

As soon as your application is approved, we’ll send you an email. This note will also confirm your effective date (that’s the date your coverage starts).

Step 3: Effective Date

Determine Your Effective Date

On and after your effective date, you can begin using your GreenShield Insurance benefits. Generally, this is the first of the month following your application approval.

You can postpone your effective date for up to two months to better align with your needs.

Step 4: Welcome Kit

Receive Your Welcome Kit

We’ll send your Welcome Kit to you in the mail and it will arrive in a large GreenShield envelope and will contain:

Your Personalized GreenShield Insurance Benefit Cards
Including your Member ID number.
Your GreenShield Insurance Policy and Schedule of Benefits
This confirms the insurance plan, benefits and levels of coverage available to you every year. Please review it carefully.
Your Plan Info Sheet
This highlights the many advantages you’ll have as a GreenShield Insurance customer.

When you apply for a plan that requires completion of the health questionnaire, you’re applying for a medically underwritten plan. We’ll review and evaluate your answers to these medical questions.

If you’re not taking medications on an ongoing basis and you don’t have pre-existing medical conditions, you could receive your approval note in a few days or possibly in just a few minutes.

If you take prescription medications or have medical conditions, we’ll send you a counter-offer that excludes drug coverage for the medications you take and those approved by Health Canada to prevent or treat your conditions.

We’ll also give you alternative plan options to consider. We will send this to you by email within about 10 days. When you decide on the option that’s right for you, just let us know.  We’ll send you an email confirming your selection and your effective date.
All GreenShield Insurance plans include four virtual visits per family every year with a Canadian-licensed general healthcare practitioner. These virtual visits are available 24/7, 365 days a year. The average wait time is just a few minutes, and you can be in the comfort of home. During your virtual consultation, you’ll receive diagnoses, prescriptions, medical notes, and lab requisitions, as necessary. If you decide to use more than four virtual visits during the year, you’ll receive GreenShield preferred pricing.
