Reminder – travel requirements for visitors to Cuba

Effective May 1st, 2010, the Republic of Cuba required all travellers, foreigners and Cuban overseas residents to possess a travel insurance policy (covering medical expenses) that had been issued by an insurance entity recognized in Cuba.

Please note: travel insurance requirements for Canadian visitors to Cuba have been updated. Going forward, we understand that the Cuban government will accept a valid Provincial Health Insurance Plan card as proof of sufficient travel insurance coverage from Canadian travellers entering Cuba.

In addition, it is strongly recommended that Canadians also take proof of additional travel insurance (i.e. a copy of their travel insurance policy or emergency assistance card) so they have the correct phone number and necessary information on hand, in case they need to contact their emergency travel assistance provider for any reason during their trip.

When travelling to Cuba, as a GSC plan member with emergency out-of-country travel benefits, you should carry with you:

  1. 1. Provincial Health Card
  2. 2. Proof of Insurance – Your GSC ID card is all you need.

These two documents are sufficient to allow Canadian GSC plan members into Cuba without the need of additional insurance or documentation. It is possible that you will hear varying opinions on what documents are required to prove your coverage. For the time being, we recommend that you carry both documents with you.
